The region of Adachi City is believed to have been marshland and was covered in reedy and it is thought that the name Adachi may have been derived from this vegetation. Adachi is the combination of the characters "Ashi" meaning reeds and meaning "standing still".
During the Edo Period (1600-1868), Adachi prospered as an agricultural region and accommodation town.
During the Meiji Period (1868-1912), the area was originally called Kosuge Prefecture and was then incorporated into Tokyo Prefecture.
In 1932, Tokyo's boundaries were expanded
and the area became known as "Adachi Ward of the City of Tokyo". This consisted
of one county and 10 villages and towns. It was officially recognised in
1943 through the official enforcement of the Tokyo metropolitan government
as Adachi Ward of the Tokyo Metropolis. The Local Government Act was enacted
in 1947 recognising Adachi as a official ward.
